Fractal Art Programming Contest, D2003

Engineering
The art and science of creation, given a set of specified goals and constraints.

The Contest

Create a set of fractal images for their aesthetic qualities, to be judged by a panel of WPI professors.

The Creation Process

  • All participants will be required to use the fractint software to create their fractals.
    • Xfractint will be installed on the CCC’s interactive and compute x86 clusters, for you to use.
    • Alternatively, one can go and download the software for your own computers.
  • A tentative set of 3 images are to be created, using a 256 color palette and a set resolution of 1024×768
  • Tentatively, all predified and custom models and pallettes will be allowed.
  • Each image submission must include the .gif image output, as well as a textual description of the model & parameters, and palette. For custom models and palettes, those files must be included.
  • Titles per image, and a small 1-2 paragraph summary about each individual piece, or of the collective set, are required.

The Judging Process

  • All submissions will be sent to me, or some other e-mail address.
  • All submissions will be posted online, without identification information.
  • No identities will be associated with the submissions when judged.
  • Tentatively, 3 WPI professors will judge the submissions.
  • Entries will be judged based on standard artistic image criteria: space, form, texture, lighting, color, etc., as well as the associated titles and descriptions.
  • When judging is complete, all submissions will be updated with identification information.
  • Winners will be announced online, and/or at the ACM general meeting.
  • Prizes have yet to be determined.
  • We reserve the right to keep, display, and archive all data submitted by users; all other rights will remain with their creators.

Notes to self:

  • Should provide better info on getting & using software.
  • Should create a sample “sbmission.” Also a good way to get me to setup the website stuff early.
  • Should provide general links about Fractals, specifically to previous contests, and the dazzling online galleries out there. (Of course, any google search for “fractal art contest” would turn them up… but whatever.)
  • Explicitly mention attempted cheating and consequences????
  • Restrict 3-D ness and animations???
